Lymphoedema is swelling of a limb (leg or arm) caused by a malfunction of the lymphatic vessels, which can no longer carry lymph away. The lymph then builds up in the tissues under the skin.
There are 2 types of lymphoedema:
Primary lymphoedema: caused by a malfunction of the lymphatic system. It may be congenital, early-onset or late-onset.
Secondary lymphoedema: caused by damage to or obstruction of previously normal lymphatic vessels.
The causes may be surgical, infectious or tumour-related, or follow chemotherapy or radiotherapy…
By draining excess fluid with gentle pumping movements and light pressure, lymphatic drainage helps reduce the volume of oedema and relieve the associated discomfort.
Lipoedema is a chronic, progressive condition that mainly affects women.
It is an abnormal build-up of fatty tissue under the skin that causes pain from pressure and tension.
Symptoms:
– Bilateral and symmetrical
– Feet and hands spared
– Pain
– Frequent bruising
By reducing excess fluid in the tissues, manual lymphatic drainage helps relieve symptoms.
